Two decades of listening to women telling him their problems on air has taught popular 988 deejay Chan Fong how to better understand the fairer sex.
For more than 20 years, Chan has been hosting a show called City Heartbeat, which offers listeners an outlet to talk about their personal problems on air.
“Almost 70% of the callers are women, and I’ve learnt to understand women a lot more through these calls,” said the 48-year-old deejay.
Chan will be speaking at the upcoming Women’s Fiesta on March 11 at The Starling Mall, in Damansara Uptown, Selangor held in conjunction with International Women’s Day.
“Their questions made me think about how I personally treat the women in my life,” he said in a phone interview.
“With every call I get, I learn more, and am spurred on to find out and understand them better.”
The theme for this year’s Women’s Fiesta is “Empowerment”, and Chan will be sharing his take on women and success, as well as his experiences while hosting City Heartbeat.
“From what I have learned from the show, I’m of the opinion that more women need to learn to stand up for themselves and empower themselves.”
He cites his mother and his wife as the most inspirational women in his life, and hopes to impart the same values they have to his two daughters.
“My mother was not highly educated, but she had very strong beliefs. She was very strict with us, but she trusted us to make our own decisions. That trust was very important, as it made me work even harder.
“As a father, I hope to be able to do the same for my children, especially my two daughters,” he added. Apart from Chan, three couples – comedian Harith Iskander and Dr Jezamine Lim, beauty queen-turned-model and actress Kavita Sidhu and geologist/businessman Roberto Guiati, as well as entrepreneur Timothy Tiah and blogger Audrey Ooi – will also be sharing their insights on March 11 in the #HeforShe Couples session.
You could also attend the “Empowering Women To Power The World” talks on March 10.
The speakers in this session are Yap Mun Ching, AirAsia Foundation executive director, Jenn Low, founder of jewellery brand Wanderlust + Co, award-winning film director Tunku Mona Riza, Dahlia Nadirah Juhari, co-founder of homegrown cosmetics brand So.Lek, and Joyce Chuah, CEO of Success Concepts.
